Solange Gets RETRO FAB For "The Evening Standard," Talks Good Sex, Good Music & Fashion

Posted: 17 Mar 2012 10:11 AM PDT

The ridiculously fabulous Solange Knowles is featured in the UK publication The London Evening Standard as the fashion world's new IT girl.  And we agree.  The colorful, inspired, confident and unapologetically fly chick is showing off her retro glam looks while dishing on her improved sex life, her summer album, being besties with her big sister Beyonce (and new niece Blue Ivy) and more.

Pics and interview snippets inside...

Shot on location at the luxe Bowlmor Lanes bowling alley at Times Square NYC, Solange taps into vintage (with a futuristic edge on some) glam looks for the occasion.  The free spirited 25-year-old even explained why women who love others and themselves dress better.

The VOGUE blogger, Carol's Daughter & Rimmel spokeswoman and singer songwriter showcased her usual color-heavy style that we love.  And in the shoot, she makes bowling shoes, bowling pins, bowling lanes, and a random palm tree look all kinds of fab:

Bra top: Nina Ricci; Skirt: Versace; Shoes: Sergio Rossi; Earrings: Lanvin; Necklace: Vanessa Arizaga; Sunglasses: A-Morir

T-shirt & skirt: Giles at Joseph; Hat: Victoria Grant; Shoes: Louis Vuitton; Bracelet: Prada.

Satin coat, bodysuit and earrings: Prada; Swarovski embellished shoes: Viktor & Rolf.

Top: Diane von Furstenberg; Latex collar: Atsuko Kudo; Latex hotpants: William Wilde; Sunglasses: Giles for Cutler and Gross; Necklace & bracelet: Prada.

Fur jacket: Frankie Morello; Bra top and skirt: Atsuko Kudo; Shoes: Prada; Earrings: Miu Miu; Necklace: Balenciaga.

Here's parts of her interview in full (we wouldn't want to take things out of context or anything):

Today, despite the torrential rain, she’s wearing an aqua green oversized sweater, flared hot-pink Armani trousers, brown Fendi heels and a decidedly unwaterproof leopard-print faux-fur coat. ‘Wow,’ she says, smiling. ‘Really not the best day to ride my bike here!’

She’s happy and contented, living with her new boyfriend, the video director Alan Ferguson, putting the finishing touches to her third album, which she hopes to release in June, and raising her son Julez, now seven. Recently, of course, she also became an aunt: ‘That was really, really insane,’ she says of the press coverage of her niece Blue Ivy’s birth. ‘Such an invasion of privacy.’ Has she offered Beyoncé any parenting advice? ‘No, I really feel like because I had my son so young, I didn’t want everyone’s help,’ she says. ‘I think people felt entitled to give advice, so I’m always very sensitive to mums and letting them feel their way out. But there have been times when she’ll ask, “Did Julez do this? Did this ever happen with Julez?” And I’ll gladly give her advice. I’m in a really good place, and I think things are evolving because of that. Professionally, personally, I think that over the last three years I’ve just had a lot more stability, a lot more clarity about where I want to be and how I want to get there.’ Finally, it seems, Solange is ready to step out from her sister’s shadow into a spotlight very much her own.

Although she and [Julez's father Daniel] Smith broke up in 2007 (Solange moved to LA, where she completed her second album, a 1960s-inspired concept record informed by the Motown she had been listening to in Idaho), the experience of living in the countryside proved a formative one, and Solange continued her songwriting in a local studio. ‘I’d have to time it around the baby’s naps,’ she says. ‘And make sure he wasn’t crying in the background on demos.’ She continued writing ‘all of these Sixties songs... I would send them to my publisher [EMI] and would check every day if someone was interested. This was before the retro vibe of Amy Winehouse and Adele... they were not very well received.’

I ask if sometimes she wants to keep the songs she writes for herself. [She has written album tracks for Kelly Rowland and four songs for her sister, including ‘Upgrade U’ and ‘Get Me Bodied’ when she was just 15.] ‘No, I actually get the same thrill from seeing someone else bring [my songs] to fruition,’ she says. ‘Especially someone like my sister who’s going to turn them into cultural milestones... I don’t enjoy all of the things that come with that. Like not being able to ride my bike here today and not being able to walk and pick up my son from school. I’ve been so scared that someone’s going to snap a picture of me with my hair like this!’ (It’s tied into little twists that fall listlessly around her angular, flawless face.)

One night, she sang some of her songs to her father. ‘And he told my mother, who said, “Oh, no. We don’t want you doing this, too. You can do anything in the world! You’re so smart.”?’ But why would her mother say that, when she’d been grooming her sister for stardom from day one? ‘I think she was nervous about me losing my childhood,’ says Solange. ‘My sister started at such a young age that this was her life for as long as she could remember.’ Did seeing the extremes of celebrity and success first-hand discourage her? ‘From a very early age I decided that I wanted to be able to do my music but still be able to live a normal life.’ She recorded a song and sent it to Columbia Records, who offered her an album deal. ‘I went into the meeting and said, “I want it to be clear that I want to write all of my music. I want to have control of that.” I had grown up around this.’ After a disagreement with the label, Solange had to promote the album, Solo Star, on her own. ‘I didn’t care. I didn’t need the money…’ She pauses. ‘It wasn’t very successful.’

Why isn’t she signed to a major label? ‘I don’t think there’s a need if you are able to fund it yourself and have a strong sense of development as an artist. It means you aren’t dependent on some A&R dude to position you with writers or producers or figure out your next direction,’ she says. ‘Major labels act as banks in terms of how they produce and release your album. No major label is really good or bad, they just 100 per cent operate as a business, which makes sense… no hard feelings.’

So how does the new album sound? ‘There’s a lot of sexual vibes on it. I think I just finally started having good sex,’ Solange says, before smiling a touch coquettishly. ‘This woman came up to me the other day and said, “You know, I think people dress a lot better when they’re in love with themselves, with other people, or with where their life is.”?’

I ask how she plans to reconcile her increased visibility with her desire for a normal life. ‘I think there’s a way to protect yourself,’ she says firmly. ‘I think the fact that I live here is very helpful. It’s about working it and not letting it work you, about being very selective about what you do and who you do it with.’ As we get up to leave, I ask if she gets to see Beyoncé, Jay-Z and her new niece a lot. ‘Yes. Actually, I invited them over for dinner tonight. I’m excited to see her; I haven’t seen her in a week and half.’ She wraps her coat around her, bracing against the weather. ‘You know, my sister and I truly are best friends.’ ES

Rihanna HEADS To Brooklyn To Host PARTY For Her Grandma, DISHES On Fashion, Katy Perry And KONY

Posted: 17 Mar 2012 08:15 AM PDT

Rihanna was spotted grocery shopping (yes...she does her own on occasion) in NYC for her Grandma's birthday party yesterday. See the pics inside and find out what she says about her own fashion sense...

Rihanna was spotted doing her own grocery shopping yesterday with bestie Melissa and security in tow during a run to Whole Foods in NYC.  And it was all so she could cook up (literally) a party for her grandmother who lives in Flatbush.  She used to spend summers and Holiday there when she was younger:

She picked up a few healthy snacks (and maybe some liquor) for a celebration she had planned with her granny Clara 'Dolly' Brathwaite.

And later.....

She tweeted, Me and gran gran Dolly gonna celebrate tonight! Happy burrday gyal!!!! 1Love

First, she cooked up a few dishes.

And the party started!

Rihanna also tweeted a cute moment between she and her grandad (Lionel) when he asked her about her hair,

"My GranDad: Robyn how ya is get hair from red to cream to black??? Cuz ya don't carry wigs!!! Ya does wash it out?! ME: ROTFL (no words)"

Ha!  They even have a wall of her framed magazine covers too.  Gotta love proud grandparents.

Now we know where RiRi gets her swag.....

In other Ri news....

During her recent Vita CoCo shoot, the pop star did an interview and talked about her friendship with Katy Perry, her thoughts on the KONY movement and fashiom.  Here are the highlights:

On collaborating with Katy: “We have been working on this for years. We still are trying to make a song together, Katy Perry and I. She is one of my favorite musicians, as well as one of my favorite people in the industry. She’s very uncalculated, very sure of herself, and that’s something very rare in this industry to find. The song will probably come out in a while,” she told Jill. “I won’t say that it’s happening right now, but it’s going to happen.”

On how they stay in touch: “Whenever we’re in the same city, we try to do something — whether it’s seeing each other for five minutes for a hug [or] whether it’s partying all night at some random after party for an award show. We try to hang out as much as we can, which is very rarely because we’re so busy.”

On her follow-up to Talk That Talk: “Actually, I have not started working on new music. I’ve started working on the new sound, but I haven’t started really recording yet. This year, we’ve kind of left a little room to play in other playing fields, like movies, acting [and] fashion. I’m getting into fashion a lot more, really spearheading it as a designer.”

On getting involved with the KONY movement: Twitter has brought about so many opportunities not only for me but for the foundations I work with like the KONY 2012 foundation, Invisible Children – we’ve been very active with them in trying to get the word out and spread the word and get my fans involved because the foundation is so driven by youth and their enthusiasm and their stand in things that are not okay.

How precious!  Christina Milian's little girl is growing up in front our eyes.  Little Violet celebrated her 2nd birthday at The Children’s Place in L.A. The company set up an adorable little girls and boys clothing boutique inside the party featuring the “Spring Dressy” collection. Each guest left with a gift bag containing a $75 gift card.

Also, Violet wore not one, but TWO dresses from The Children’s Place at her party.  She started out wearing a girlie ruffle floral dress, but then changed into a more glam sequin dress right before they brought out her cake!  Learning fashion from her mommy already.

Carson Daley was there as well.

So cute!

Tichina tweeted: "Another B Girl pose. I swear she posed this way on her own. She's an 80's girl naturally."  Cute!

And Tia Mowry Hardrict was every bit the working mom as she snapped an Instagram pic while feeding her baby boy Cree on the set of her new movie.  She's currently filming "MistleTones" for an ABC Family Movie special in Utah.

One chicken & rib joint in Iowa just ain't enough.  So Flav brought his crisptastic abilities to Las Vegas (where he currently resides) to begin another greasy venture.  He just opened up the House of Flavor Take Out Restaurant yesterday in Sin City.

And his fiancee' of 9 years, Liz, was right on his arm with one of their sons Gibran.  Sidenote: If you saw ABC's "Celebrity Wife Swap" episode a couple months ago where Flav's fam swapped with Dee Snider's fam--it would explain A LOT.  Just sayin'....

After dropping some breasts and legs into the deep fryer, Flav and his clock cut the official opening day ribbon alongside his fam:

Yes indeed.

I bet you that chicken is delicious though...

Lil Mo & Tweet Drop "I Love Me" Video + MELANIE FIONA'S "I Been That Girl" (Co-Written By Drake)

Lil Mo is back on the scene with Tweet.  And the twosome just dropped a video for Mo's new track "I Love Me."  Check it inside, plus Melanie Fiona's new song she wrote with Drake, "I've Been that Girl."

Lil Mo teamed up with the low-key singer Tweet for her track "I Love Me."  The new video shows Mo singing in the church while dealing with a relationship.  And Tweet looking and sounding like her usual fab self.  Check out the video above making its rounds on VH1 Soul today.

And as Melanie Fiona's new album drop date approaches, new tracks from the LP are getting leaked.  The newest drop--a song co-written by her longtime friend and fellow Toronto homie (who she also used to be in a singing group with)Drake called "I Been That Girl."  Check it below:

Mel told The Boombox a few months ago about why Drake took time away from his own album to write for hers:

"In the midst of working on his album, he wrote a song specifically for me and my album," she reveals. "It's amazing because I love that it's written by a guy from a woman's perspective. It's really, really cool. We all know he's great for locking in on emotion, and I'm great for writing and singing about it, so I think it's a really cool concept that I think is really going to empower women. 'That Girl' is a girl who's done some foolish things for love, but never again."

Ms. Fiona's sophomore LP The MF Life is out March 20th on Universal Republic/Title 9/SRC.

Rihanna SHOWS OFF New "Cross" Tattoo, Says "I'm Working On Getting My Curves Back!"

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:54 AM PDT

Rihanna (a fan of the "ink") has a new tattoo. See what she got inside and find out what she said about her own curvy figure and getting her butt back!

Rihanna recently inked a small cross on her collarbone, and pics surfaced online today.  And though she has been mum on its meaning, perhaps she is asking a Divine power to help her pack on the pounds!  She's said that she wants to put on weight below the waist.

"I'm working on getting [my butt] back," she told PEOPLE. "It used to be my favorite body part, but now it's disappeared!" Luckily, the singer's got plenty of techniques in mind for the task. "I'm going to have to start hiking or at least going on the elliptical or walking on an incremental treadmill or horseback riding.  Something that firms the butt."

But if the exercise doesn't work, her diet should help with the pounds.  She also said,

"I'm eating everything.  I've been eating ice cream and fast food and Italian food."

But she quickly added, "I drink a lot of coconut water.  It balances out all the other toxic stuff I put into my body."

FOOLISH ACTIVITIES: Reality Stars Derek J and Neffe CAUGHT UP In Hair Salon GUNFIRE Fight

Posted: 16 Mar 2012 10:20 AM PDT

Reality tv stars Derek J and Neffe (Keyshia Cole's sister) were dodging bullets recently when an angry stylist decided to bust a cap after Neffe complained about her hair! Deets inside....

Down in the ATL, Keyshia Cole's sister Neffe found out the hard way that you can't complain about a bad weave....some stylists are extra sensitive!

According to the police report, after getting a "hairdo" that she felt was a "hair-don't" at one salon, Neffe went across town to Derek J's salon so someone could fix her situation.

But when the first stylist got wind that Neffe came back complaining about the "style," he showed up with a gun!

Derek J said,

"Her (hair was) messed up to the point we didn't know what to do. So I was just like, reach out to the stylist and say 'Hey, what did you use, what did you do?" and it turned from a professional conversation to more of an argument, but we thought it was done."

But it wasn't..........

"A few hours later a gentleman shows up, the other stylist, wanting to talk and started an argument. I asked him to leave," owner Lisa McCall said.  "Before turning away, he waved the gun in my face and said, 'You don't think I will?' And I backed up," McCall said.

And then....the stylist pulled the trigger and a bullet went into a floor board!

"We knew it wasn't a good thing when he came, but we thought it was going to be a quick exchange with words and then he was going to be gone. So, nobody really knew he would pull out a gun," Derek said.

The gun-packing stylist is still on the loose but no one was injured.....thankfully!

But Derek J added that he's pissed his floor got messed up!  And he tweeted,

I want to say thank you to everyone that sent their concerns about the incident  I am ok it is just unfortunate

This ghetto ish right here.....

Weezy told the crowd (which is also something he will say in his upcoming ad campaign for Mountain Dew): "If you get anything from me, it's to find your name and do you because, ladies and gentlemen, that's what I do," he told the crowd in what he said was a commercial for the new soft drink partnership.

Knowing what Weezy's grill looks like gives a whole new meaning to Mountain Dew mouth.....

And in one highlight, the President talks about the bin Laden raid saying,
